The Berwyn Fire Company, along with mutual aid from the Radnor and King of Prussia fire companies were dispatched at 4:36 p.m. to the 500 block of Pugh Rd. in Tredyffrin Township for a house fire.
Engine 2-3 (Berwyn) arrived on location to find a single family home with a fire involving the kitchen. Initial fire crews from Berwyn and Radnor worked to extinguish the fire and limit the damage to the home. Officers from the Tredyffrin Township Police Department were able to discharge a fire extinguisher into the kitchen prior to the arrival of fire crews, which helped to keep the fire from spreading throughout the house.
Additional assistance was called from the Valley Forge and Malvern fire companies, but was recalled due to the fire being placed under control.
The Chester County Fire Marshal investigated the origin of the fire that caused significant damage to the kitchen. There were no reported firefighter injuries. Two civilians were evaluated for smoke inhalation, but did not require transport.
The Berwyn Fire Company would like to remind families and individuals to always stay in the kitchen when you are cooking or heating up food. In the U.S. cooking equipment fires are the leading cause of home structure fires and associated civilian injuries. According to the NFPA these fires accounted for 40% of all reported home structure fires and 36% of home civilian injuries in 2010. Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in these fires. |
