We’ve had several people ask about why citizens should report damage to their municipality.

Damage information is collected for several reasons. First, to assess the actual scope of the incident in order to see if the minimal criteria for Federal assistance can be engaged to help recover from whatever disaster occurred. Federal disaster assistance only becomes available after certain criteria are met.

Unfortunately some may find themselves uninsured, under insured or just overwhelmed from the event and require additional assistance. If Federal disaster assistance becomes available, municipalities may be able to recoup some of the funds used to respond to and recover from the incident. Also, some programs may become available to assist the public. At the very least, collecting the damages maintains skills that need to be prepared for any future disasters and help keep taxes manageable.
