Tredyffrin Township Fire/EMS Funding Joint Statement

December 23, 2014

Dear Tredyffrin Community,

Due to the importance of township financial support for the Fire Companies and the fact that Tredyffrin Township’s budget was being finalized on Monday, December 15, 2014, leadership and personnel from Berwyn, Paoli, Radnor and Malvern Fire Companies attended the monthly Board of Supervisors meeting as a unified Fire Company that serves the citizens of Tredyffrin Township.

We work as a team daily to protect and respond to 9-1-1 calls over 19.8 square miles of land in the Township. This includes a resident population of 29,332 citizens, along with thousands of visitors, motorists and workers who also frequent the Township around the clock. In 2013, over 2,500 combined calls were responded to in Tredyffrin Township by our agencies, not including the responses to other municipalities we protect.

The majority of the fire/EMS first responders in Tredyffrin Township are VOLUNTEER. Many of these volunteers also live and pay taxes in the Township. Due to their selfless and dedicated commitment to the community, they save fellow citizens millions of dollars annually in lieu of having a fully paid fire/EMS department.

While we provide various levels of service and protect different portions of the Township, we are all unified on the topic of adequate, sustainable funding and its impact on our respective operations looking out to the future. We are committed to working together on this important need so that our communications to the townships are streamlined, clear and representative of our collective needs.

We understand that Tredyffrin officials have many constituents with a diverse array of needs…most of which are financial in nature. The $40,000 increase of ‘new additional funding’ in 2015 to be shared between Berwyn, Paoli and Radnor fire companies is most appreciated by us. As was outlined in Berwyn’s budget presentation on November 17, 2014, Berwyn will use this increased contribution as well as the contribution from Easttown Township and proceed with adding the full-time employee they believe is necessary to ensure adequate coverage to the community. Each organization will put this additional funding to good use for their respective operations and we truly do appreciate the time spent by Tredyffrin officials on this critical issue.

Moving into 2015, we intend to continue our efforts to educate the community about who we are as first responders, what services we provide and how we decide to spend the limited financial resources we receive through various sources including municipal funding. We believe it is important that more people understand our situation so they can make informed decisions related to making an annual donation, consideration to volunteer, or deciding to support or not support us in public forums.

Looking ahead to 2015, we will be engaging Tredyffrin officials early and often in meaningful ways to advance the discussion related to adequate, sustainable funding. We are open to and want to explore all potential options to achieve this goal including the impact of a fire tax. This is the highest collective goal as we look to the future.

The Berwyn, Paoli, Radnor and Malvern fire companies look forward to continuing to work with Tredyffrin officials to provide for the best public safety possible for all citizens in Tredyffrin Township.

Yours in Service,
