A large group of Berwyn's volunteers and career staff began the long and difficult journey to become technical rescue certified in January of 2013. These firefighters began a course focused on topics such as ropes and riggings along with a confined space rescue specialty. In a month, Berwyn's finest engaged in over 60 hours of training which culminated in multiple tests to receive a Core Rescue Certification (NFPA 1006) and National Certifications in Confined Space I and II.

As of this date, the Berwyn Fire Company has over 25 firefighters who are now certified as Confined Space Rescue Technicians as well as possessing a Core Rescue Certification which covers basic technical rescue principles. These certifications are completely voluntary but demonstrate the commitment that our members have to providing the best service to our community. Additionally, Berwyn has joined the Chester County Technical Rescue Team which provides rescue assistance all across the County when specialized rescue skills are required.

This coursework required a significant amount of personal sacrifice for each of our firefighters but at the end of the day it enables us to better serve the community.

Special thanks to Berwyn Lt. Matthew Valocchi for coordinating this important training endeavor through the Bucks County Public Safety Training Center.
