Berwyn Fire Chief Eamon Brazunas reports that during the recent ice storm, Berwyn firefighters responded to 75 calls during a 24 hours period from Wednesday into Thursday.

One of the more serious calls involved a house fire on Daleview Road at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. The residents were without power and using their fire place. Radiant heat ignited the mantle and a wall around the chimney of the one-story home, which is near Conestoga High School.

Firefighters were hampered by fallen wires and had to use a secondary route to reach the home. Once there, firefighters opened up walls to reach the fire.

Brazunas said crews are concerned about elderly residents isolated and without power since the storm. On Wednesday, crews also had to walk a distance around downed wires to reach a family near Old Eagles School Road and Upper Weadley Road who had lost power and were trying to get an elderly resident to a warm car.

Berwyn EMS has had two incidents involving elderly residents in the Main Line Berwyn Apartments, which has been without power.

Devon Manor Nursing Home also lost power but has a generator.

Brazunas stressed to residents using generators to maintain proper ventilation. While they have not had to respond to any CO emergencies in their area, Chester County has had more than 20 people sicken by the gas produced by generators.
