Berwyn firefighters responded to a serious fire in the 500 block of North Valley Forge Road in Devon just before 11 p.m. Friday evening. First arriving firefighters found fire coming out of the first floor of a home.

“The husband and wife and their two dogs were alerted by their smoke alarm,” said Berwyn Fire Chief Eamon Brazunas. “This is significant, the house was without power, they had a generator but they had done everything right, having battery backed up smoke alarms on every floor.”

The residents escaped the home and called 9-11.

Brazunas said firefighters were unable to get water from the fire hydrant in front of the home and had to be supplied from a secondary hydrant. They had the fire under control at 11:43 p.m.

The bulk of the fire was in the family room, officials don’t believe it was related to the generator. The cause is considered accidental bending further investigation. Officials estimate damage at $225,000.

This was the 20th call for Berwyn Fire Company Friday. Paoli, Malvern, and Radnor Fire Companies assisted.
