TREDYFFRIN TWP., PA - On Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at 2:42 p.m., the Berwyn Fire Company was dispatched to the 600 block of Bair Rd. for a burning smell inside a residence with a smoke detector sounding.

While Berwyn firefighters were enroute, the Chester County Department of Emergency Services 9-1-1 Center advised the resident was now reporting flames showing from the 2nd floor of their house. The incident was then upgraded to a house fire response, which called for mutual aid units from the Radnor Fire Company, Paoli Fire Company, and Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company.

First arriving Berwyn units encountered fire showing from a 2nd floor bedroom and incident command was established at 2:48 p.m. The Tredyffrin Township Police Department confirmed all the residents were safely evacuated from the single family home.

The initial interior crew of Berwyn Engine 2-3 was met with zero visibility throughout the entire 2nd floor of the home as they made their way inside to extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the initial room of origin, but crews spent a considerable amount of time opening up walls and ceilings to ensure no fire had extended into void spaces. The fire was declared under control by 3:10 p.m. Firefighters also spent time sifting through debris to save as many personal belongings and property for the homeowners.

All personnel and apparatus were clear of the scene by 5:00 p.m. Fortunately no civilian or firefighter injuries occurred during this response.

The following fire/EMS companies operated at the scene; Berwyn Fire Company, Radnor Fire Company, Paoli Fire Company, and Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company. A total of 50 volunteers and 6 paid personnel assisted with fire suppression, EMS, or traffic control throughout the incident.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department and Berwyn Fire Police closed Bair Rd. between Keller Rd. and Mount View Rd. for the duration of the incident.

PECO was also called to secure the electric to the residence to prevent any first responder injuries. A fallen tree hit electrical wires in the neighborhood that caused a power outage prior to the fire occurring. The Chester Fire County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the cause of the fire per standard protocol. It was determined that the fire was accidental and electrical in nature. The total fire loss is estimated at $78,000.

Thank you to the East Whiteland Fire Company who stood by to cover the greater Tredyffrin-Easttown area from Berwyn’s firehouse while crews operated at this fire.
