Old Lancaster Road (State Road 1007) over Amtrak Bridge in Tredyffrin Twp. Closed for Repairs

BERWYN, PA – The Old Lancaster Road over Amtrak Bridge in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County closed on Saturday, May 19th in order to be rehabilitated due to its structural deficiency. This is the bridge that connects to Lancaster Avenue near the Main Line Berwyn Apartments. The project is scheduled to be completed in late August and is being managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

After learning about this closure last year, the Berwyn Fire Company started working on a plan to minimize response delays by identifying a location to relocate resources and personnel on the other side of the bridge. This was also a concern due to existing response time challenges in the northern portion of the coverage area in Tredyffrin Township that includes Chesterbrook, Glenhardie and the E. Swedesford corridor.

This bridge is also the primary route for the majority of the Company’s calls, along with being a key access point to the fire station for volunteers responding from their homes at all hours of the day.

As a result, the Company is operating a fire/EMS substation at PECO’s Berwyn Service Building located in the area of Rt. 252 and Cassatt Rd. in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. A fire truck and ambulance, along with paid staff are in place during the peak hour daytime call volume period for the duration of the project. Volunteers will also be dedicating time to staff the substation and respond from their homes when called upon.

This action will help to balance resources and personnel between Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships in delivering effective emergency services during the bridge closure.

PECO has generously donated the space to house the apparatus and personnel trailer on their property, as well as allowing access to their restroom facilities. Along with the support of our partners at PECO, the Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors, Easttown Township Board of Supervisors, Chester County Department of Emergency Services, Belfor Property Restoration in Exton, ModSpace in Berwyn, PennDOT, and Loftus Construction, Inc. have all contributed support to get the substation up and running.
