BERWYN, PA - The Berwyn Fire Company stayed busy during the past 24 hours with 19 calls being handled by volunteers and career staff. After responding to an early morning commercial fire alarm in the Chesterbrook Corporate Center first responders remained quiet until midday. From that point on numerous medical calls in Tredyffrin and Easttown were received, along with simultaneous incidents being dispatched throughout the day. There was three calls for mutual aid assistance between Radnor and Willistown Townships that EMS resources were summoned.

As heavy rains began to move into area late last night, the flash flood watches and warnings started to be issued. Rescuers were alerted just after 12 Midnight to the Glenhardie section of Tredyffrin Township for multiple reports of flooding and vehicles in the water. This particular area is a known trouble spot in the Township during significant rainfalls. First arriving crews, along with the Tredyffrin Township Police and Public Works Departments had difficulty accessing the area to investigate due to the flooding conditions.

A water rescue team comprised of Berwyn personnel deployed in the area of Glehardie Rd. and Richards Rd. located a subject in the water near their car that had been swept away by the fast moving flood waters of Trout Creek. The driver was quickly assisted to dry land and was uninjured. Crews remained on scene until after 2 a.m. to survey the area and to ensure no other drivers found themselves in harm's way. While on location, personnel investigated a home being flooded on Glenhardie Rd. and cleared two cars that got caught in water on nearby Colonel Dewees Rd.

The Fame Fire Company (West Chester, Chester County) and Jefferson Fire Company (West Norriton, Montgomery County) each responded with rescue boats in the event they were needed and staged at the Valley Forge Middle School. The West Whiteland Fire Company and Good Fellowship Ambulance of West Chester stood by with emergency units at the Berwyn Fire Company to provide coverage for the greater Tredyffrin-Easttown area as crews were dealing with the flash floods.

The Berwyn Fire Company strongly encourages that if you cannot see the road in front of you due to flooding conditions, "Turn around, don't drown!" You need to seek high ground and wait to drive your car, or you will risk getting trapped in swift water. While we do not experience some of the significant flooding seen in other parts of the country, we do experience swift water flooding conditions that create high risk situations for those stuck in the water and the rescuers who respond to help them.
