BERWYN, PA - The Berwyn Fire Company remained busy this past weekend with a total of 20 incidents handled by volunteers and career staff. During this timeframe, there were 5 instances where one or more simultaneous calls were being responded to in the Tredyffrin-Easttown community.

There were several fire call types that occurred, including two separate electrical fires on Saturday, August 4th in the 1200 block of Westlakes Drive in Tredyffrin Township and in the 800 block of Nathan Hale Rd. in Easttown Township. EMS personnel provided medical care at 9 basic life support calls and 5 advanced life support calls.

Crews also responded on Saturday to the eastbound direction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the area of mile marker 326.0 for a motorcycle crash. First responders arrived on location with an injured motorcyclist down in the roadway. Firefighters and EMS personnel worked in tandem to provide medical treatment and loaded the patient into the ambulance. The victim was airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia with life threatening injuries. The Pennsylvania State Police provided traffic control and investigated the scene. All units cleared this particular incident by 8:00 p.m.

As the Old Lancaster Rd. over Amtrak Bridge remains closed for repair work near the firehouse, the operation of the Fire/EMS Substation, located at the PECO Berwyn Service Building in the area of Rt. 252 and Cassatt Rd. in Tredyffrin Township, continues to demonstrate the value of having resources deployed in the northern tier of the Berwyn Fire Company coverage area. This has helped mitigate the bridge closure impacts on response times and in many cases resulted in improved service delivery, especially in the Glenhardie and Chesterbrook sections of Tredyffrin Township.

Along with checking your smoke detectors, the Berwyn Fire Company wants to remind to check your carbon monoxide alarms as well. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can kill you before you are even aware it is in your house. It causes side effects such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, disorientation and fatigue that are often mistaken for the flu. These effects can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and length of exposure. It is recommended a carbon monoxide detector be purchased if you use gas or a fireplace for your heating, and be installed near every separate sleeping area of the home.
