BERWYN, PA - After crews spent a good portion of Tuesday night this week handling the house fire in the 300 block of Old Lancaster Rd., personnel were back at it on Wednesday with 15 calls dispatched by the Chester County 9-1-1 Center. The majority of these calls took place in the Tredyffrin-Easttown community, while there were 8 occurrences of overlapping calls.

The day started early at 4:35 a.m. with a medical emergency on Homestead Rd. in Tredyffrin Twp. A few hours later at 8:05 a.m., firefighters mitigated a carbon monoxide leak at a private residence along the 100 block of Sugartown Rd. in Easttown Twp. The home was equipped with a working carbon monoxide alarm that alerted the occupants to the dangerous gas. It was determined the carbon monoxide was being caused by a problem with the heater. The residence was ventilated and PECO was requested to respond to also check the gas service to the home.

Two mutual aid medical calls were made to Radnor and Willistown Townships as their first responders were also busy with incidents. The Paoli Fire Company responded to the 3rd overlapping medical call on N. Valley Forge Rd. in Tredyffrin Twp., as Berwyn EMS had ambulances on responses in Tredyffrin and Radnor Townships during the 5 o'clock hour.

Emergency crews responded at 10:11 p.m. to a 5-car pileup on Darby Paoli Rd. (Rt. 252) in the area of Beaumont Rd. Due to snow melt earlier in the day, black ice formed on parts of the roadway that caused the crashes. Fortunately no one was injured, but firefighters remained on scene for over an hour assisting the Easttown Twp. Police Dept. with closing the roadway to prevent other collisions. The scene was cleared by 12 Midnight after PennDOT salted the roadway.

The final call of the night was a medical response at 11:36 p.m. in the 700 block of E. Swedesford Rd. in Tredyffrin Twp. All volunteers and career staff were back at station by 12:30 a.m. for some much needed rest.
