BERWYN, PA - In 2005, the Main Line Chamber Foundation initiated a four-part project to address issues that impact on the recruitment and recognition of volunteer firefighters and EMT’s and the funding of the volunteer fire companies and emergency medical services in the region. This effort is a continuation of a class project undertaken by the Chamber’s Leadership Main Line Class of 2004, which highlighted the need for better public awareness of the serious challenges facing volunteer fire and emergency medical services in the region.

The Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship Program is designed to provide recognition for this important group of dedicated community servants who are part of the 17 volunteer fire companies serving the Main Line. With generous community support, the Main Line Chamber Foundation Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship program plans to continue to grow and provide support, recognition, and honor to the fire/EMS personnel serving our communities.

On Tuesday, June 11th, at the Lower Merion Township Municipal Building, the Berwyn Fire Company was represented by a strong group of volunteers who were awarded scholarships in the pursuit of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Congratulations to these dedicated volunteers who serve the residents of Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships and are all proud graduates of Conestoga High School.

The Berwyn Fire Company would also like to acknowledge the support of the family of the late Thomas J. Hays of the scholarship program. Hays was a beloved volunteer with the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore and the Narberth Fire Company who died in the line of duty in 2006 at the age of 25. The Hays Family support of the emergency services community is an example of strength and honor that motivates us to do better for our respective organizations and fellow members.

Congratulations to all the volunteer scholarship recipients from the various Main Line emergency services organizations. And thank you to the Main Line Chamber Foundation for their support of the volunteer fire/EMS community.
