Berwyn Firefighters Respond to Home Heating Oil Spill in Tredyffrin Twp.

BERWYN, PA - On Thursday, July 18th at 1:32 p.m., the Berwyn Fire Company was dispatched for a fuel spill in the area of Conestoga Rd. and Old Lancaster Rd. in the Berwyn section of Tredyffrin Township. The 9-1-1 caller reported an old home heating oil tank in the back of a dump truck had shifted during transport and then leaked onto the roadway.

The crew of Berwyn Engine 2-2 arrived on location with a large spill involving home heating oil. Personnel moved quickly to stop the flow of the oil that had already started to enter nearby storm drains. Due to the rain moving through the area this made the situation even more challenging to contain the spill.

Additional personnel responded with Berwyn Engine 2-3 and ATV 2 to assist with containing the spill with various absorbent materials.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Chester County Hazardous Materials Team, Tredyffrin Township Public Works Department, and Tredyffrin Township Engineering Department were all notified as this incident was being mitigated.

The intersection of Conestoga Rd. and Old Lancaster Rd. was closed for several hours, along with restricted access to Martins Ln. from Conestoga Rd. A private clean-up company responded to clean-up the oil in the roadway and nearby sidewalks. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Chester County Hazardous Materials Team will continue to monitor the area where the oil got into the storm drainage system.

All Berwyn Fire Company apparatus and personnel cleared the scene by 6:18 p.m. Berwyn Deputy Chief Justin Brundage returned later in the evening with the Tredyffrin Township Police Department to assess the clean-up efforts. The roads in the area affected were reopened at 12:30 a.m. on Friday, July 19th.
