BERWYN, PA - The Berwyn Fire Company was recently notified that it was awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to assist in the construction of a new fire station in the Village of Berwyn. The current station is over 93 years old and is part of a two-phased infrastructure project that also includes construction of a substation in the greater Chesterbrook area.

RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multi-jurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues, or other measures of economic activity.

This grant application was successful due to the collaborative efforts of the Berwyn Fire Company, Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors, and Easttown Township Board of Supervisors. The Chester County Economic Development Council provided important guidance during the pre-application process.

The Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors and Easttown Township Board of Supervisors approved a joint resolution last year that will provide up to $4.5 million towards the infrastructure project. These funds provide the needed 50% match that is required under the RACP guidelines.

The total cost of the station to be constructed on the current site at 23 Bridge Avenue in Berwyn will cost just over $8 million. Between the Township support, RACP grant, and donations received to date, this project moves that much closer to ground breaking.
