BERWYN, PA - Berwyn volunteers and career staff kept busy yesterday responding to numerous calls in the T-E community, as well as supporting our mutual aid partners. This included a box truck fire, electrical fire in an apartment building, a bus crash and several EMS incidents that occurred on Wednesday, July 29th.

As one of the EMS crews had finished up a medical call at PennMedicine at Valley Forge in Tredyffrin Township before 9 a.m., fire/EMS personnel were alerted around 10 a.m. to the area of Lancaster Ave. and Waterloo Rd. in the Devon section of Easttown Township for a motor vehicle collision. Crews arrived to find a bus that had struck a car carrier. Fortunately there was just one passenger on the bus. EMS provided treatment on scene for this subject who was cut by flying glass. Firefighters also cleaned up debris on the roadway and assisted with traffic control.

EMTs and Paramedics responded to overlapping calls at 12:03 p.m. at the Main Line Berwyn Apartments in Tredyffrin Township and at 12:41 p.m. for an advanced life support call on Three Rivers Court in Easttown Township. A couple hours later before 3 p.m., EMS was back at PennMedicine at Valley Forge for another medical emergency.

At 3:34 p.m., a box truck was reported on fire in the area of Rt. 202 North and Rt. 422 West in Tredyffrin Township. Due to the location on the border of Chester and Montgomery counties, units from Upper Merion Fire/EMS were also dispatched to this incident.

Berwyn Deputy 2 arrived on location at 3:38 p.m. and established command as Engine 2-2 and Ambulance 2-2 arrived a minute later. The crew of Engine 2-2 began extinguishing the fire, while personnel with Engine 2-1 and Ambulance 2-1 supported their efforts. Firefighters from Upper Merion Township Fire/EMS provided additional water to extinguish the fire and performed rehab for all crews. The Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company and Radnor Fire Company each responded with one truck to assist at the scene. Berwyn was available from this call before 5:30 p.m.

A house fire in Marple Township, Delaware County occurred not long after crews returned to the firehouse that resulted in Berwyn being called for an Engine to standby at the Newtown Square Company at 6:09 p.m.

While returning to station, a fire alarm was dispatched at 8 a.m. at the Stonegate at Devon Apartments – Building E. Engine 2-2 arrived on scene and located a smoke condition in the 1st floor with an electrical odor present. With the assistance of property maintenance, a small electrical fire was located in a utility room. Firefighters used fans to remove the smoke from the building so residents could reenter their homes. PECO was summoned to the scene to inspect the damage and to restore power to the building. The Radnor Fire Company assisted at this call with their ladder truck and personnel who checked other parts of the building for any issues.

Throughout the day, 6 career staff and 16 volunteers were engaged with incident responses. Thank you to the Officers of the Tredyffrin Township Police Department, Easttown Township Police Department, Upper Merion Township Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police for their support at the various calls.
