TREDYFFRIN TWP., PA - The Berwyn Fire Company, along with automatic mutual aid from the Radnor Fire Company and Newtown Square Fire Company, was dispatched at 10:47 a.m. to the unit block of Berkley Rd. in the Devon section of Tredyffrin Township for a house fire.

First arriving personnel were met with smoke and fire showing from a single family residence at 10:52 a.m. Employees from the nearby Ed Forde Service Center assisted one of the elderly residents in a wheelchair out of the front of the home as they were making their exit to safety. The other two adults home at the time of the fire were able to self-evacuate.

The crews of Berwyn Engine 2-2 and Radnor Quint 15 began to extinguish the flames, while additional personnel with Berwyn Engine 2-3 and Radnor Engine 15 worked in tandem performing various tasks. This included cutting a ventilation hole in the roof to remove heat and smoke from the structure. Firefighters from the Paoli Fire Company and Gladwyne Fire Company were also called to the scene.

The fire was declared under control at 12:04 p.m. by Berwyn Battalion Chief Evan Brazunas. The Chester County Fire Marshal's Office investigated the cause of the fire and have classified it as undetermined at this time. A neighboring residence also suffered some property damage due to the radiant heat. All fire/EMS units cleared the scene by 1:41 p.m.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department provided traffic and scene control. Berkley Road was closed between S. Valley Forge Rd. and Lancaster Ave. during the fire.

A firefighter was transported by Berwyn EMS to Paoli Hospital for a medical related issue. They were evaluated and released from the hospital at 5 p.m. today. Two additional firefighters incurred minor cuts and bruises and were treated on scene by EMS crews.

PECO gas and electric responded to ensure the utilities were turned off, while the American Red Cross assisted with temporary housing and other needs of those displaced by the fire. A crew from Belfor USA (Exton Office) also responded to board up and secure the property.

The crews of Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company (Engine 68-3) and Uwhclan Ambulance Corps (MICU 187-1) provided standby coverage in the event of other incidents occurring in the T-E community. The Valley Forge firefighters also responded to the scene to expedite cleanup efforts before heading back to their station.

Thank you to the neighbors, including the Black Cat Café and Miesen Family who provided water and soda for first responders during the fire.
