Berwyn Fire Company Introduces Infrastructure Project

By IN Community Magazine Tredyffrin-Easttown - Spring 2021
March 17, 2021

This past January, the Berwyn Fire Company marked the one-year anniversary of the opening of Station 102 located at the Neuman Professional Building at 1100 West Valley Rd. in the

Wayne section of Tredyffrin Township in an ongoing effort to reduce response times and to improve the level of emergency services provided to the community. This action also helps to balance resources and personnel between Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships. This fire/EMS substation is staffed with a combination of career staff and volunteers. It houses (1) rescue-pumper and (1) basic/advanced life support licensed ambulance.

This initiative was made possible due to the collaborative efforts of the Berwyn Fire Company, the Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors and Administration, the Easttown Township Board of Supervisors and Administration, the Chester County Department of Emergency Services and the Neuman Family.

The substation is strategically located in the area served by the Berwyn Fire Company, near the Gateway Shopping Center off of Valley Forge Rd. The station is primarily focused on serving the residents and businesses in and around the northern portion of the coverage area in Tredyffrin Township that includes Chesterbrook, Glenhardie, Old Forge Crossing, and the neighborhoods along the Swedesford corridor. The location allows for strong response times to homes along Conestoga Rd., N. Fairfield Rd., Spencer Rd., Devon State Rd., and others that are located in the northeastern portion of Easttown Township.

Since this station opened, a response time reduction of up to 50% has been realized during dozens of responses. In 2020, nearly 91% of EMS calls were reached within 10 minutes or less in the area served. For the more serious calls, cardiac arrests, strokes, allergic reactions, respiratory distress, and traumatic injuries, EMS crews arrived within 6 minutes or less 50% of the time. Better response times and quality medical care equals improved patient outcomes.

After many years of focusing on day-to-day operations, the Berwyn Fire Company has embarked on a path to address its long-term infrastructure needs; 1) the building of a permanent substation facility and 2) renovations for the Berwyn station.

The substation near the Gateway Shopping Center is functioning with apparatus kept in a temporary tent type structure, along with office space for administrative work and sleeping quarters in a separate building. While the current configuration has achieved improved response times, a permanent facility is required to increase operational capabilities and to house additional emergency vehicles.

The current station in the Village of Berwyn dates back to 1929 and the building's last renovation took place in 1970, which added more room to fit larger fire trucks. With only (1) shower and the lack of standard amenities, the need to significantly renovate the facility to properly operate with over 75 volunteers and career staff is needed.

The Berwyn Fire Company, Tredyffrin Township and Easttown Township recognize that the scope of these two projects will be large in scale, effort and expense, but they also understand the benefits for the protection of the entire Tredyffrin/Easttown community for many years to come. As the projects take shape, the Fire Company and the Townships will continue to update the residents and ask for their support.
